We often focus on the things that define us externally, the roles we take, the goals we achieve, the success we claim. But what truly shapes us? What pushes us to take risks, to step up, to lead, to get to the heart of the issue?
In this series, we’re not just sharing careers and credentials; we’re uncovering the heart behind the journey. It’s about the moments that define our paths, the lessons learned when we failed or fought or grew, and the raw truths that guide us forward.
Each conversation will take you deeper into the stories behind the titles. From challenges faced in the trenches of change, to breakthroughs that redefined direction, these are the people who have built something more than a career, they’ve built lives driven by purpose.
Finding Meaning in the Work
Laura: What drives you? What’s meaningful to you in your role?
Scott: There’s an old stereotype about lawyers being expensive and transactional, but for me, law is about relationships. It’s about managing them, making them successful, and, when things go south, figuring out how to either fix them or end them properly. Sometimes that means facilitating an exit. Sometimes it means finding common ground. It’s all about how you bring people back to ‘good,’ whatever ‘good’ might be in that context.
Laura: As a lawyer, do you ever find yourself at odds with your own values?
Scott: That’s a great question. You always serve the client’s interests, but there are times when you can see a path that’s more productive, even if it’s not what they want to hear. That’s where you have to be honest and ask them, Do you really want to spend months, maybe years, fighting this? Do you want this in your head every time you go to bed?
That’s often the real a-ha moment—when people stop seeing a dispute as purely about winning and start thinking practically about what the best outcome actually looks like.
A Day in the Life
Laura: So what does an average day in the life of Scott look like?
Scott: It’s not always thrilling! Sometimes, it’s spending the entire day crafting a single paragraph—because in law, structure and wording are everything. You need clarity, but sometimes you also need strategic ambiguity. It’s an art.
Then there are the client meetings, strategy discussions, and of course, getting out to events like FinTech-Tables, which is a bit different from the traditional legal world but a natural fit for firms like ours. Law firms work best when they speak the language of their clients, and these forums are a great way to connect in a meaningful way rather than from behind legal documents.
Leading Through Change
Laura: Change is relentless. Whether it’s regulation, technology, or the way we work—how do you guide teams through it?
Scott: If I had the answer to that, I’d be a millionaire in the Bahamas!
Change has always been happening at a fast pace. Look back at history—people were terrified when we switched from gas lamps to electric lights. It’s no different now with AI and automation; it’s just new technology, new fears.
The key is to remove the fear factor. What exactly is making people anxious? Is it the unknown? The possibility of failure? If you can address that head-on and build a tolerance for turbulence, people feel safer taking risks.
Laura: Speaking of failure—do you think it’s necessary for success?
Scott: Some days, failure feels like a learning experience. Other days, it’s just failure!
But in reality, failure is part of the process. The important thing is to debrief, understand why it happened, and adapt. If you never experience setbacks, you don’t build resilience, and you certainly don’t learn.
Future Plans & Personal Anchors
Laura: 2025—the year to thrive! What’s ahead for you and Vialex?
Scott: We’re pushing out further across the UK, making sure we’re a firm that doesn’t just support businesses but actively improves them. There’s a restlessness in the UK economy right now—people are ready to break through some of the stagnation, and we want to be there to help them navigate that.
Laura: And on a personal level?
Scott: Finishing my Munros. I love being in the hills, the glens, the forests—just switching off and getting back to the fundamentals.
Laura: That seems to be a theme with everyone I’ve spoken to! Maybe we need a FinTech hillwalking day.
Scott: As long as I don’t have to chase you up the hill, I’m in!
Advice to Young Scott (and the Next Generation)
Laura: If you could sit down with young Scott from Inverness, what would you tell him?
Scott: Be true to yourself.
Authenticity matters more than anything. It shapes your work, your relationships, and ultimately, your success. If you’re doing something you genuinely enjoy, you’re going to be better at it—and people will see that.
Also, be alert to opportunities, but also to risks. Some industries disappear overnight. Some careers take unexpected turns. Being adaptable is just as important as being ambitious.
Oh, and have an escape plan—because sometimes things will go sideways, and you need to know how to pivot.
Closing Thoughts
